Been consumed with trying to get this jig done, super close.

I first learned to weld with an oxy/ac set up while in a metal sculpture class in college. I remember getting really good at perfect looking welds, super hard with oxy/ac. One day the prof brought in a new welder. "Look its like a glue gun." "Fuck you!" He was this old timer hippy cat, that LOVED the mig welder. "Listen, if it sounds like frying chicken, you got a good weld."

When I was a wee lad, my pops would put Spike Jones on the 78 record players. Spike totally changed my musical tastes, direction, sensibilities, among other things. The comic element was of course the draw at first, but then when you listen and learn, there is a lot of serious musical talent going on. There isn't much of a leap from Spike, to Cage, to Zappa.

This is Matt. He builds rockets and is pretty smart. He doesn't skate board very well apparently. I'm horrible at math, hence the art degree. So, having Rocket Scientist Matt in the shop while I make my new frame jig keeps me from saying " Oh, just eyeball that shit ". I say, " Dude, we aint building fucking rockets, it's a motorcycle!", Matt says, "Yeah, but you ride the motorcycle, I aint riding the rockets." Word, word.

Siksika has gone to a good home where the new owner is already planning his vision quests. I spent some deep, intimate, quality time with her and I am thankful. My last ride was thundering down the 10 freeway towards the ocean as the sun was winking it's deep golden rays at me. It all seemed very fitting.

2011 was a good year. I'll miss her. She's left her mark and there are plenty more journeys in her spirit.

I recall at a really young age, middle school probably, hearing Son House and being moved to tears. I found a box of 45 records at the local dump, and Son House was one of the records. Mann Perspective

The Dave Mann show has become sort or a ritualistic last hurray to the year. A group of us gather in the wee hours and ride whatever hand made machine we have, up the coast to Ventura for the day. The Mann show is always interesting and there always seems to be a few bikes to talk about. This day, I left my camera at home and just tried to enjoy the day with out documenting it. The ride was amazing of course, the ride home was better at sunset. I took two phone pics and here they are.

This is a 30" wheel, with an iPad as a headlight, YES and iPad. I really wanted to talk to this cat and find out how much that wheel cost, but I couldn't bring my self to do it.

Many mango seasons ago, 2004 or so, I ran in to this dude while doing some visual effects work. He had a dirty chopper built out of a Honda Rebel. Sold him a springer, he turned an axle for me, I hounded him for a while about building bikes, but he was to busy flying kites, building art cars for burning man or something. Fast forward a few years and a Dice party bring us back together. He just finished his 2 or 3 year long radical ironhead chop with said springer ( now heavily chopped ). "Hey, want to ride to Mexico?" I asked. "Sure." he said. Later I asked "Hey want to help build a couple bikes?" Sure. A few years later and a few bikes later, Flying Monkey Fabrication is plugging away.

To be honest, I never really liked the movie Easy Riders. I recall watching it at a real young age and being freaked out by the LSD grave yard scene. It seemed to go on forever. "Can't they just get back to the motorcycles?" Honestly, that's all I ever really liked about the movie, the riding shots. As you get older you appreciate some of the acting scenes, but for the most part it was about the riding to me. With that in mind, I've never been one to collect those iconic pictures of the two on the choppers giving the bird and all that. I love them, but I'm not into having my shop look like everyone else's. Plus, it seems like a kind of rule, " Dude, where is the Easy Riders poster? What? You don't have one?"

Now I do.

I like it because it isn't the typical one, and it is also similar to a Leach print I have. This is an original 1969 poster I just picked up. Smoking deal.

Uncle Sam, Handmade in the USA

I finished this dry version of the bike some months back. I've been so busy riding it, I haven't had time to shoot pictures. So, here is a first look at the government cheese version of my 1966 "Culver City style" chopper.

I've got some good solid miles on it since buttoning it up in August. I rode it on an epic trip from Brooklyn to North Carolina, riding the Blue Ridge. That ride was the real test for this bike, and man o man did this scooter sing. After that run, I was head over heals in love. It's been really hard to get off the bike, it just carves and glides like a magic carpet. I've had and built a lot of bikes now, but I can honestly say, this bike is ME.

The foundation of the bike is a 1966 slab side shovel. I've had this motor for some time and ran it in the purple lane splitter. I pulled it apart, freshened up the lower end with bearings and other salt and pepper. The top end was in good shape, so just sproosed it up a bit. Added an early Morris mag that I found at a swap for 100 bones, 100 more bones for parts and Uncle Sam sparks to life.

The tranny is a later model hodgepodge late 70's. It was worn out from the miles I had on it in the purple bike. I did a complete rebuilt with Andrews gears, and Andrews main shaft. Gotta a leaky seal but shifts like it just came from the factory.

The frame was a good score and perfect candidate for chopping. I found the chewed up 49 wishbone frame through some connections. 200 bucks! Neck was raked, very poorly I might add, lots of ugly welds, and shit cut off like some cat did it with a dull chain saw while on ludes.

Around the same time I found the frame, I scored an extended springer from Mike Davis of Born Loser / Born Free fame. I don't care what anyone says about you Mike, you are a solid dude. The springer was a 10ish over Buchanan's job. Yep, the spoke and wheel cats use to extend springers. I mocked the bike up with a 21 up front and 18 rear and measured up how much I would stretch, and rake the frame. On top of the original neck being horribly raked, the frame had a nice curve to the back bone that shouldn't have been there. So I chopped it all off from just above the seat post and just above the side car loops. I used a later model neck I had from another swing arm frame and donated the rest to JD. The frame was bent so bad that I actually had to remove the entire back bone and heat and bend the frame back at the seat post.

With a little help from JD and Gilby, we bent up a new back bone and down tubes. 2.5 up and out. I put a nice slice in the neck, dropped the front end on and bounced on it till it was raked where I wanted it. 45ish. Of course, I narrowed the front end, along with dropping in a new 1" neck.

The tank is an old Wassell that I stretched 2", narrowed in the rear, tunneled, relocated the filler and petcock, as per the frisco vibe.

The bars are some prototype Cro-TBars, if all goes well, these will be coming soon.

The Cobra seat and P-pad were sort of re-gifted to me via Nash. This seat originally was part of Wil's Hood Rat that we built. I new at one point that Uncle Sam needed a Cobra seat. I asked Wil if he still had it, he said, "no, but I know who does". Couple phone calls later Nash was at my door step with the seat. Super awesomeness. I owe you Nash!

The fender was a 2 dollar find trailer fender that I narrowed and "duck tailed". The tail light is from a 40-50s era school bus I found for 10 bucks at a local swap. There are lots of other little cool finds and parts that came together via friends and swap meets. Its a chopper. That word isn't played out. This is a chopper.

They say, never say never, but this is MY bike and as long as never is, this will never be sold. Next year I'll "finish" it up with some frame molding and paint, maybe a little more if the government sends me my check.

We all face hardships in our lives at one point. How we handle those difficulties and what we leave behind in the wake speaks volumes of ones character.

My good friend Conrad Leach is taking his very personal loss and making a difference.

Conrad's 17 year old nephew spent his last few weeks in hospice and lost his battle to beat cancer on 20th October 2011. This panel is being auctioned to raise money for the EllenorLions Hospice in Kent.

Compensate

Micheal has been spending the last few weeks in and out of my shop trying to get his 69 running. The bike was a good score, but a big unknown, as it had been sitting for 10+ years. Most everything was there on the bike and just needed a few things to bolt up before trying to kick it over. After a little of this, a little of that, Mike rewired the bike, we fixed a frozen rocker arm, re-fitted a snug oil pump breather, mocked up some pipes and Sat finally got it running. Sounded good for about 3 min.

Didn't even get hot and just sounded like the motor seazed. Bummer. I said, before we do anything lets just make sure it isn't something other than the motor. We pulled the primary and turned the motor over by hand. Hmmm. Tranny rolled over, no problem, in gear as well. Weird.

Put the compensator back on and no go! WTF? Somehow the compensator was binding, and I am still not sure why. So, I took a hub space I had laying around and machined it down to make a make shift compensator, bolted it on and BLAM! Mike hit it first kick.

First time I've ever run in to this little weirdness.

My father Ernest C Owens, a young Marine at the age of 19, hit the Beach in Empress Augusta Bay on the Island of Bouganville in the Solomon Islands during WWII. He was severely wounded in the Battle of Piva village just a few months after the landing.
My father was of course a very important and influential part of my childhood. Those events on that Island influenced all us in our family in one way or another. We grew up with a father with a crippled left leg with the scars of the machine gun bullets that ran up his leg as well as the eye he lost when a Japanese Mortar round hit close to him. That round killed every marine near him and he was found laying on their bodies in the hole it created.
He was a good father who struggled with his injuries but NEVER let them interfere with his ability to be a real man. He fought, protected us kids, and provided for his family. At times we as youngsters did not understand him or what he had been through as a young man, and rebelled as young kids will do (especially in the 60s and 70s).
Yet he was hard but fair, and could be funny, gentle and a disciplinarian when he needed to be.
Even today after all these years, I rely on the lessons I learned by and from him on how to deal with life. He was not perfect by means. He was a flawed human being like we all are. But I continue toremember how he showed strength, bravery, determination and integrity that was impeccable throughout his life. He was an incredible man and father. I cant think of anyone that could have ever taken his place. He passed away in 1999 and I miss him every single day

I have no aspirations of "defending my crown" I am just so amped to be part of the show and really looking forward to seeing the other bikes and learning a thing or two, and of course having a great time!
